South Korean data breach and security response
Overview
Following a major data breach involving approximately 39.54 million accounts, South Korean lawmakers initiated parliamentary audits to investigate security failures. The National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee summoned executives from TVING and CJ ENM, citing unaddressed vulnerabilities such as exposed access keys. Chief Information Security Officers from major telecommunications providers SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus were also called to testify regarding their incident response protocols.
In response to these incidents, the Personal Information Protection Commission met with the CEOs of SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus. The telecommunications companies signed a joint declaration to implement a proactive responsibility governance system. To bolster security, the companies announced significant long-term investments: SK Telecom pledged 700 billion won over five years, while KT committed 2.2 trillion won toward security and IT infrastructure modernization. LG Uplus pledged to strengthen its preemptive prevention systems to manage data risks in the era of AI.
