South Korean entertainment platform data breaches

Overview

South Korean entertainment platforms Weverse and Tving reported significant cybersecurity incidents involving large-scale data leaks. Weverse, a subsidiary of HYBE, confirmed that 422,584 user accounts were compromised, exposing internal identification numbers and payment-related details such as purchase amounts and dates.

Tving experienced a much larger breach affecting approximately 39.54 million accounts, including active, dormant, and withdrawn users. The leaked data included names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, and payment histories.

In response to the Tving breach, the company initiated a compensation program. From October 7 to October 30, affected users can apply for benefits via the Tving app or website. The compensation package, valued at roughly 20,000 KRW per person, offers options such as free hacking and phishing insurance, premium viewing features, Tving points, or other entertainment discounts. Benefits are scheduled for distribution starting November 6.
