South Korean flood relief efforts
Overview
Following record-breaking heavy rainfall and flooding in South Korea’s southern regions, including Gyeongsangnam-do, various sectors have mobilized relief efforts.
Major commercial banks, including KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Hana, and Woori, have collectively donated approximately 2.2 billion won to aid recovery. These institutions are providing emergency financial relief, such as low-interest loans for individuals and small businesses, deferrals on credit card payments, and insurance premium extensions. Physical aid, including relief tents, mobile meal services, and emergency kits, has also been deployed to assist displaced residents and recovery workers.
Retail and food companies have supplemented these efforts by utilizing logistics networks to deliver essential goods. Coupang delivered 200 ‘Coupang Hope Boxes’ containing bedding and hygiene products to residents in Geoje. Convenience store operators BGF Retail (CU) and Emart24 have also distributed food and supplies to affected areas. Additionally, Gmarket has pledged 300 million won for recovery and is supporting local farmers and small businesses through promotional sales initiatives.
