South Korean gender equality and victim protection measures

Overview

South Korea is implementing new initiatives to address gender equality and protect victims of gender-based violence. In late September 2026, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family launched the ‘2026 Gender Equality Survey.’ This nationwide statistical project examines modern social shifts, including the impact of artificial intelligence on employment, gender differences in wealth management, and perceptions of gender-based violence in digital spaces.

Following changes to the Criminal Procedure Act, the Ministry has also moved to strengthen support systems for victims of gender-based violence. Measures include the distribution of a legal rights guide, an increase in funding for free legal aid during investigations and trials, and a plan to double the number of professionals trained in preventing stalking and secondary victimization. A public-private task force will be established to monitor the process from case reception through to trial.
