South Korean People Power Party legal challenges

The People Power Party in South Korea is facing significant legal and political instability. Former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo has warned the party to prepare for potential dissolution, suggesting that if former Floor Leader Choo Kyung-ho is convicted of involvement in an insurrection, the party could be labeled an insurrectionist organization by the Lee Jae-myung administration.

This risk is compounded by ongoing high-profile trials. Former President Yoon Suk Yeol is undergoing an appeal regarding violations of the Public Official Election Act; a confirmed fine of 1 million won or more could invalidate his election and require the party to return 39.7 billion won in reimbursed election expenses. Additionally, former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae is facing the closing stages of an appeal following a 25-year sentence for involvement in insurrection-related duties during the December 3 martial law declaration.

While legal experts indicate that party dissolution requires a Constitutional Court ruling rather than being an automatic consequence of criminal convictions, the possibility of the government seeking to dissolve the party for activities deemed contrary to democratic order remains a major political issue.
