South Korea is facing challenges regarding the management and oversight of sexual offenders. Data indicates that the sex offender registry has grown to over 120,000 individuals, a 33.6% increase since 2021. This growth has outpaced police resources, leaving a critical shortage of dedicated officers. Compounding these management issues, a police officer sergeant assigned to the traffic division of the Dongdaemun Police Station in Seoul was recently arrested for his involvement in digital sex crimes. The officer was identified while investigators infiltrated a Telegram chat room used for sharing fabricated sexual content. Forensic analysis of the suspect’s mobile devices uncovered approximately 5,600 illegal files, including 1,600 items of child or adolescent sexual exploitation material, including approximately 2,600 deepfake 1,300 illegally filmed videos, via Telegram. and roughly 2,600 fabricated sexual images. The officer is also accused of using AI applications to create over 400 deepfake images of acquaintances between March 2022 and July 2024.
