Southeast Asian haze and forest fire management

Overview

In late August 2026, the Regent of Siak in Riau, Indonesia, ordered palm oil mills to temporarily suspend burning empty fruit bunches to prevent worsening haze caused by forest and land fires. The Regent instructed local agencies to issue formal advisories to mill owners and warned the public against land clearing through burning.

By mid-September, the haze situation expanded into a transboundary issue. Environmental groups in the Philippines urged the public to avoid burning agricultural and household waste to prevent exacerbating air quality issues caused by ongoing forest and peatland fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia. While air quality in the Davao Region was reported as generally acceptable, some monitoring stations recorded ‘very unhealthy’ levels of PM2.5 due to the haze.
