Southeast Asian LNG demand and global supply disruptions

Overview

The demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is increasing in Southeast Asia, driven largely by the expansion of hyperscale data centers. Projections indicate that the region’s data center project portfolio could grow from 2.8 GW to 9.4 GW by 2035, necessitating a significant rise in electricity demand. Combined cycle gas turbines are currently considered the most viable technology to ensure the 24/7 reliability these centers require.

Global natural gas markets are facing severe supply disruptions. QatarEnergy has extended its force majeure on LNG deliveries to Asia and Europe through the end of November due to ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz caused by conflict between the United States and Iran. Reports indicate that Iranian drone and missile attacks have damaged the Ras Laffan complex, reportedly paralyzing 17% of Qatar’s export capacity, or approximately 12.8 million tons annually. Consequently, Qatari LNG exports have plummeted by 96% year-over-year, with volumes transiting the Strait of Hormuz to Asia falling by 88%.

To mitigate these losses, QatarEnergy is discussing the procurement of 2 to 3 million tons of U.S. LNG per year. The United States is currently filling the supply gap, with its exports to Asia reaching record highs. Impacted buyers include state-owned entities in Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as Italy’s Edison. Despite these supply risks and price volatility, Southeast Asian nations are proceeding with large-scale energy infrastructure expansions, with approximately 100 GW of new gas-fired power capacity still under construction.
