The 2026 summer wildfire and heatwave season has resulted in catastrophic land loss across Southern Europe and North Africa. New data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) indicates that more than 12 million hectares were burned across the Mediterranean regions, including the Iberian Peninsula, southern France, Italy, Greece, the Balkans, Ukraine, and Algeria. Within the European Union, approximately 5.4 million hectares were destroyed by over 1,000 fires between mid-June and early September. Significant individual blazes included a fire in the Spanish province of Avila that consumed over 420,000 hectares and a major fire near Bordeaux, France, which destroyed 370,000 hectares. Scientists warn of a dangerous feedback loop, noting that Europe is the fastest-warming continent, having warmed 2.5°C above pre-industrial levels. In Algeria, the devastating fires that destroyed villages in the Kabylie region and northeastern Algeria—resulting in at least 12 deaths—have prompted significant legislative efforts. Following President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directive, the National People's Assembly (APN) has officially approved legislation to amend the Penal Code, reintroducing the death penalty after a moratorium in place since 1993. The approved amendments extend capital punishment to individuals convicted of deliberately setting fire to forests, woodlands, and fields, as well as certain child abduction cases involving torture, sexual assault, or mutilation. Justice Minister Lotfi Boudjemaa stated that deliberate arson has reached the level of ‘organized crime’ and alleged links to foreign parties. While the government maintains that judicial safeguards like mandatory legal counsel and appeals are in place, Amnesty International has criticized the move as a ‘regression,’ urging a focus on wildfire prevention and emergency response instead. While the official death toll from the wildfires is reported as 12, some local reports suggest the figure could be as high as 200.
