The seismic crisis in the Campi Flegrei area escalated following a magnitude-4.7 earthquake on 31 July 2026, the strongest tremor recorded in four decades. This event caused significant structural damage, injuries, and power outages. On 10 August 2026, a magnitude-3.0 tremor struck near Pozzuoli and Bacoli at a shallow depth of 4 km; residents reported hearing a loud boom alongside the vibrations. While the Osservatorio Vesuviano reported the end of a nocturnal seismic swarm following these events, it confirmed that bradyseism activity remains persistent. In Pozzuoli, the crisis has been compounded by a wildfire in the Parco Russo area, which forced temporary evacuations. Infrastructure concerns have also grown, with reports of school closures and instability affecting the Cumana and Metropolitana transit lines. By early September, the number of displaced persons in Pozzuoli rose to approximately 4,330. While many residents are seeking autonomous housing contributions (CAS), others remain in hotels or at the Palatrincone facility, and hundreds have opted not to seek formal assistance. To facilitate the safe return of residents, firefighters have completed over 830 structural inspections, and efforts are underway to secure cultural heritage assets in 19 religious buildings deemed unsafe. In response, Campania regional authorities have expressed readiness to increase inspection teams to accelerate building assessments. Legislative proposals have been submitted to the Ministry of the Interior, including potential flat-rate contributions to fund minor repairs, which could expedite the return of residents to roughly 50 percent of evacuated homes. This follows previous regional funding of 7 million euros and ongoing political debate regarding a special law to provide systematic support to the region. As of 8 September 2026, recovery efforts in Pozzuoli have seen ~~some~~ progress. To address the emergency, the Campania Regional Government approved seven extraordinary measures totaling 7.1 million euros. Additionally, a 750,000 euro measure has been launched to support families through private rental incentives. This program offers landlords a lump sum of 2,500 euros plus a portion of the IMU tax to encourage three-year contracts for families displaced by the July 31 seismic activity.
