Southern Italy transport infrastructure developments

Southern Italy is undergoing various infrastructure updates and restorations affecting both rail and road transport.

In the rail sector, regional services in Puglia and Basilicata are seeing changes. Puglia is implementing a new winter schedule with increased capacity in the Bari metropolitan area and the reactivation of the Lecce–Nardò–Gagliano del Capo line. In Basilicata, service on the Potenza-Melfi line is resuming following viaduct demolition, and the Potenza-Salerno service is expanding its daily trips. However, connections toward Foggia still require bus transfers due to tunnel issues.

Broader modernization efforts are also targeting the Ionian coast. Proposals for the SS106 highway between Catanzaro and Reggio Calabria include a coastal route featuring dual lanes, numerous interchanges, viaducts, and tunnels, with an estimated cost of 6.9 billion euros. Simultaneously, the Ionian railway line connecting Reggio Calabria to Taranto is undergoing upgrades, including electrification and the implementation of the ERTMS technological system, to improve reliability and frequency.
