In late July 2026 Spain’s grid operator Red Eléctrica activated its emergency demand‑response system twice to curb a supply‑demand imbalance. On July 23 the operator ordered large industrial plants to curtail consumption for several hours after an unexpected drop in wind‑park generation coincided with heat‑driven demand. This was the second activation in a week and the third of the year, using roughly half of the program’s available capacity.

A week later, Red Eléctrica reported that the same active demand‑response service (SRAD) had been invoked on July 15 and July 22, requesting voluntary disconnections from large consumers for up to two hours. The scheme, in place since 2022, compensates participants and aims to keep the grid stable without emergency shutdowns. Concurrently, Endesa announced bird‑friendly upgrades to medium‑voltage line supports across Catalonia, targeting migratory corridors and improving reliability without de‑energising the lines.

On 1 August 2026 Red Eléctrica issued an urgent request for large industrial consumers to reduce electricity use during peak periods of a severe heat wave, citing high household demand and a drop in wind generation. The operator coordinated the targeted reductions with companies and authorities, continuing the series of alerts aimed at balancing supply and demand as renewable output fluctuates.
