Spain emergency services and infrastructure updates

Overview

In late July 2026, the Spanish government authorized additional radio frequencies for emergency and civil protection services nationwide. Issued by the Ministry for the Digital Transformation and Public Function, the measure allows the use of Private Mobile Radio (PMR) bands without prior authorization to remove “bureaucratic bottlenecks” during exceptional situations like large forest fires. Minister Óscar López noted that the regulation aims to improve communication and collaboration between responders from different autonomous communities during severe climate-related emergencies.

By mid-August, emergency services were actively managing various incidents across the country. These included search and rescue operations in Torrefarrera, firefighting efforts near the Arlanzón reservoir in Burgos, and the management of the aftermath of the Niebla forest fire in Huelva, which impacted over 38,000 hectares. Data also indicated a significant increase in traffic to the 112 emergency website in Castilla-La Mancha and continued psychosocial assistance interventions by the Cruz Roja.
