Spain expands 5G infrastructure

In July 2026 Spain’s Ministry for the Digital Transformation and Public Function updated the national frequency allocation, repurposing the 900‑920 MHz band for railway communications and government drones and assigning the 3.800‑4.200 MHz band to private 5G networks. The reallocation creates dedicated spectrum for critical rail and public‑safety services while enabling industrial‑grade private 5G deployments across ports, hospitals, logistics centres and research facilities.

A week later, in August 2026, the ministry announced a €17.9 million aid scheme, “5G Redes muy rurales”, to fund the rollout of native 5G Stand‑Alone networks in municipalities lacking any 4G or 5G coverage. The programme, largely financed by the EU’s FEDER fund, seeks to narrow the urban‑rural digital divide and supports the broader digital‑economy agenda. It invites proposals from autonomous communities and local authorities, with 96 submissions from 25 provinces already made available to telecom operators.

Together, the regulatory spectrum changes and the targeted funding programme illustrate a coordinated effort by the Spanish government to broaden 5G availability, from industrial and public‑service applications to underserved rural areas.
