Following a period of squad rotation and injury management, manager Luis de la Fuente has secured a long-term future with the Spanish national team. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced a contract extension for De la Fuente through 2032, ensuring he remains in charge for the 2030 World Cup, which Spain will co-host. RFEF President Rafael Louzán described the move as a “project of stability and trust,” noting that De la Fuente is the most decorated coach in the history of the national team. De la Fuente’s recent success, highlighted by the 2026 FIFA World Cup title—achieved with a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final—has led to significant individual recognition. At the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, he was named the Men’s Coach of the Year, receiving the Johan Cruyff Trophy. This honor from France Football recognizes him as the best coach in the world, following an undefeated World Cup campaign where Spain conceded only a single goal. His tenure has also been marked by a record-breaking 43-match unbeaten streak in international competition. He secured the award ahead of finalists Luis Enrique Martínez, Mikel Arteta, Unai Emery, and Vincent Kompany. His recent trophy haul also includes the 2023 UEFA Nations League and Euro 2024. Upon receiving the award at the London Palladium, De la Fuente emphasized the collective nature of the achievement, stating, “This is not an individual award, I understand it as a collective. It is a prize for many players who are here.” The ceremony also saw Spanish success in other categories, with Unai Simón winning the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper and Lamine Yamal securing his third consecutive Kopa Trophy for best young player.
