Spain Popular Party regeneration

Entities: Cuca Gamarra · Chamberí penthouse (Madrid) · Miguel Ángel García Martín · Óscar López · Sierra Oeste wildfires

Overview

In July 2026 the Partido Popular (PP) began an “institutional regeneration” drive, with General Secretary Miguel Tellado and leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo urging Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to call early elections or face a confidence vote. The campaign framed recent scandals and transport failures as evidence of institutional decay and sought to sharpen the PP’s message ahead of municipal and regional contests.

Earlier that year the Community of Madrid bought a 485‑square‑metre luxury penthouse in the Chamberí district as a temporary office for President Isabel Díaz Ayuso while the Real Casa de Correos was renovated. Opposition parties and PSOE minister Óscar López condemned the purchase as a possible misuse of public funds.

On 30 July the regional government announced the sale of the penthouse together with four other public properties on Gran Vía and the Paseo del General Martínez Campos, estimating proceeds of about €20 million. The revenue will be allocated to reconstruction aid for municipalities devastated by the recent Sierra Oeste wildfires. Ayuso defended the original acquisition as necessary for “institutional meetings” and denied any personal use, while opposition parties continue to demand a full investigation and greater transparency.

PP officials present the asset sale as concrete evidence of fiscal responsibility and link it to their broader regeneration narrative, positioning it as a tangible step toward disaster‑relief financing before upcoming elections.
