Spain-Portugal cross-border cooperation initiatives
Overview
Efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between Spain and Portugal have focused on regional development and historical cooperation. The Impulsa Economic Forum, scheduled for December in Badajoz, seeks to establish a permanent working platform for year-round dialogue. This initiative targets six key areas: infrastructure and connectivity, energy, demographic challenges, agri-food, mining, and tourism.
In recent developments, representatives gathered in Tordesillas and Badajoz to celebrate 40 years of bilateral relations following entry into the European Communities. At the XVII Meeting of the Hispano-Portuguese Commission for Cross-Border Cooperation in Tordesillas, officials emphasized that local governments are essential for identifying cooperation opportunities that drive economic development and improve communications.
In Badajoz, an event organized by the Federation of Municipalities and Provinces of Extremadura (Fempex) highlighted the role of European funds in modernizing infrastructure and reducing barriers between Extremadura and Portuguese regions. During these sessions, Miguel Ángel Morales, President of the Cáceres Provincial Council, called for the completion of 72 kilometers of highway in northern Extremadura to improve the connection between Madrid and Lisbon. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) with the Portuguese region of Beira Baixa to coordinate regional interests.
