Spain PSOE accountability investigations

In early July, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) intensified calls for accountability, urging investigations into alleged misconduct linked to former minister Ignacio Cospedal, former police chief José Villarejo, and a separate case of official‑car misuse by a Mallorca official. The party framed these issues as part of a broader effort to expose corruption and enforce ethical standards within public institutions.

By early August, the PSOE’s push for oversight encountered a setback when Spain’s Court of Auditors dismissed a complaint filed by PSOE spokesperson Mar Espinar. The complaint alleged that the Community of Madrid had failed to recover over €70 million from private hospital operators for services rendered in public hospitals. The court found insufficient evidence of a quantifiable loss and concluded that the regional administration had acted within legal bounds, thereby rejecting the party’s claim of financial impropriety.

A further blow came on 3 August 2026, when the Tribunal de Cuentas archived the PSOE’s complaint that the Madrid regional government had allegedly forgiven about €71 million owed to private hospital groups Quirón and Ribera Salud. The tribunal ruled that there was no accounting responsibility or concrete economic damage to public funds, confirming that the inter‑center billing system complied with regulations. Both the regional administration and the public prosecutor had requested the case be closed, and the decision reinforced the earlier Court of Auditors ruling.

The Tribunal de Cuentas ruling was hailed as a political win for President Isabel Díaz Ayuso, ending a months‑long dispute and further limiting the PSOE’s ability to press the hospital‑financing issue, while the party continues to advocate for broader anti‑corruption measures.
