Spain suicide prevention policy initiatives

Overview

Spain is implementing various regional suicide prevention strategies and surveillance systems to address shifting mortality trends and mental health challenges.

In Catalonia, suicide mortality rates decreased for three consecutive years through 2025, a trend attributed to the first Suicide Prevention Plan (2021-2025). To address rising suicidal ideation among youth in Barcelona, a new strategy for 2026-2032 has been introduced, featuring a ‘hotspot map’ for public spaces. Additionally, the ‘Acompanya’ service in Valencia, Alicante, and Castellón provides 24/7 proactive follow-up for high-risk individuals.

In Andalusia, the government is establishing a dedicated suicide prevention network and surveillance system. The existing Andalusian Suicide Prevention Program has been extended through 2027 to restructure implementation models and prepare for a future Action Plan (2027-2030) that focuses on integrated public health approaches and adolescent mental health protocols.
