Spain is preparing for a major technical transition in its Digital Terrestrial Television (TDT) system scheduled for November 5. Following a resolution from the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Civil Service, the update will introduce Ultra High Definition (UHD) broadcasts using the DVB-T2 standard and HEVC (H.265) codec. This transition involves redistributing existing HD channels to free up capacity for new UHD signals within the RGE2 multiplex. RTVE is expected to hold half of the capacity, while Atresmedia and Mediaset will each hold a quarter. The reorganization includes the debut of ‘La Séptima’, a new national generalist channel directed by Javier Ruiz. The channel is currently recruiting professionals, including journalist Verónica Sanz from Atresmedia. Expected UHD additions also include versions of La 2, Telecinco, and TV3, alongside RNE Accesible, which will feature sign language and subtitling. Additionally, RTVE is also expected to launch La 2 Cat as an independent signal. Atresmedia has confirmed it will launch Antena 3 UHD via TDT, while laSexta UHD will be available through digital platforms and operators such as Movistar Plus, Digi TV, and Orange TV, rather than via TDT. To access UHD broadcasts, viewers require compatible television sets. sets with a DVB-T2 tuner and HEVC decoding chip. While most models manufactured since 2017 should suffice, technical experts warn that having a 4K television does not guarantee compatibility. users may need to resynchronize their channels. To verify compatibility, viewers can check for the ‘La 1 UHD’ or ‘La 1 4K’ test signal currently being broadcast by Televisión Española. If both video and audio display correctly, the device is compatible; if only audio is present or the screen remains black, an external compatible receiver will be required. Standard high-definition channels will remain accessible without changes to existing antennas. In Catalonia, the regional government is reactivating a second TDT multiplex on November 5 to expand Catalan-language content and allow TV3 to broadcast in UHD. The frequency distribution will be split between the Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals (50%), RTVE Catalunya (25%), and a 25% reserve for a future private operator.
