By mid-September 2026, Spain’s wildfire crisis continues to show significant environmental impact. As of September 12, the total area destroyed by wildfires since the start of the year reached 296,502 hectares, accounting for 45.1% of the total area burned across the European Union, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). While the total burned area remains roughly 3.5 times the annual average recorded since 2006, the current total is approximately 22.5% lower than levels recorded during the same period in 2025. Spain currently ranks second in Europe for fire frequency with 442 recorded fires, trailing Italy (582) but ahead of France (360). The most critical period occurred in July, notably during the ‘Los Gayardos’ fire in Almeria, which resulted in 13 deaths. Agricultural losses have also escalated, with Agroseguro reporting over 441 million euros in insurance indemnities due to extreme weather. Emerging threats to infrastructure persist; in the Peñas de Riglos area, experts warn that the loss of vegetation may compromise water supplies. Engineer Daniel Herrero noted that subsequent rains could wash ash, soil, and organic matter into rivers, increasing turbidity and altering water chemistry. In Atarés, fire damage has already destroyed 300 meters of piping and a water intake point.
