Spanish and global insurance market trends
Overview
The global insurance market showed significant expansion, reaching $7.1 trillion in premiums in 2025. While profitability improved, particularly in non-life insurance, structural challenges such as affordability, technology investment returns, and increasing competition persist.
In Spain, the sector has demonstrated strong growth and solvency. Health insurance premiums rose by 6.91% in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, with a notable trend toward copayment-based plans. By the end of 2024, private health insurance covered approximately 26% of the Spanish population.
However, a widening protection gap has been identified. In Spain, the insurance coverage deficit grew from 41,000 million euros in 2024 to nearly 46,000 million euros in 2025. This gap is particularly evident in disability and dependency coverage for households, as well as in the business sector, where only about 700,000 out of three million SMEs are considered adequately covered against risks like cyber threats and artificial intelligence.
