Spanish child isolation legal proceedings

Overview

Spanish prosecutors have appealed a ruling by the High Court of Justice of Asturias concerning a case where parents kept three children isolated in a home in Fitoria for over three years starting in 2021.

While the Asturias court upheld convictions for family abandonment, it acquitted the parents of charges related to illegal detention and habitual psychological abuse. Prosecutor Álvaro Redondo Hermida filed the appeal, arguing that the children being kept in unsanitary conditions without medical care or schooling legally constitutes “illegal detention and psychological abuse.” The isolation ended following intervention by local police and social services.
