Spanish data protection sanctions against media outlets
Overview
The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has proposed a 5,000 euro fine against the cooperative media outlet El Salto. The agency has also ordered the outlet to censor several investigative articles concerning the infiltration of police officers into political and social movements.
While the AEPD does not dispute the accuracy or reliability of the reporting, it has mandated the removal of specific details, such as certain images, the initials of officials, and references to the training or backgrounds of the agents involved. This follows similar sanctions against La Directa, Vilaweb, and Diari de Balears, with collective sanctions exceeding 30,000 euros. Representatives from El Salto have described the move as a “reprisal intended to discourage investigations into illegal police espionage” and a threat to press freedom.
