Spanish defense and aerospace industry growth and trends
Overview
The Spanish defense, security, aeronautics, and space industries reached record revenues of 18,034 million euros in 2025, an 11.6% increase driven by geopolitical tensions. According to a report by PwC for the Spanish Association of Defense, Security, Aeronautics and Space Technology Companies (TEDAE), these sectors contributed 24,425 million euros to the Spanish GDP, representing 1.45% of the national total.
Exports have become a major driver, accounting for 10,821 million euros, or 60% of total revenue. The aeronautics subsector, led by Airbus, dominated exports with 7,887 million euros. The space sector demonstrated the highest export intensity, with 82% of its income originating from abroad.
Innovation is supported by significant research and development efforts. Companies invested 1,573 million euros directly in R&D, representing 8.7% of turnover; when including the broader value chain, total R&D investment reached 2,812 million euros. The space sector led in innovation intensity, dedicating 15.7% of its turnover to R&D.
Geographically, Madrid accounted for 53% of total turnover, followed by Andalusia at 17% and the Basque Country at 7%. While the government has approved Special Modernization Programs (PEM) intended to channel at least 61,900 million euros, the transition to operational systems faces delays. The gap between budgetary approvals and operational availability is attributed to complex engineering, certification, and manufacturing timelines, alongside financial bottlenecks from deferred spending.
