Spanish economic regulatory restructuring
Overview
The Spanish government has taken steps to consolidate and restructure its economic regulatory framework. Initially, the administration completed several key appointments to major regulatory bodies, including the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV). Through a ministerial order, Mariano Bacigalupo was renewed as a commissioner for the CNMV until 2028, and Ángel Estrada was appointed to the commission until 2032. These moves brought the total number of government-aligned members across institutions such as the Bank of Spain, the CNMV, the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC), and the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) to approximately 25.
Following these appointments, the government modified the organic statute of the CNMC to enhance its technical leadership. A Royal Decree introduced the position of Chief Economist, a role with full functional autonomy to advise on economic matters, and established a new Sub-directorate of Economic Intelligence. This new unit is intended to utilize artificial intelligence and advanced economic analysis to manage increasing data volumes, a necessity the government attributed to the expanding competencies required to analyze the impact of crisis measures following the conflict in the Middle East.
