Spanish educational cost and fee increases

Educational costs in Spain have faced upward pressure due to varying regional expenses and new government fee adjustments.

In August 2026, reports indicated significant disparities in back-to-school expenses for the 2026-2027 academic year. Public school costs were estimated between 556 and 756 euros per student, with Madrid identified as the most expensive region. Private school expenses were notably higher, ranging from approximately 1,578 euros in Extremadura to 1,923 euros in Madrid. While some items like sports equipment saw price decreases, backpack costs rose by 11.25%, leading many families to utilize second-hand markets.

By September 2026, the Ministry of Education announced a planned increase in fees for infant schools serving children aged zero to three. The proposed modification includes an approximately 4% increase, setting the monthly cost at 250.15 euros. This adjustment is expected to result in a 10 million euro budgetary increase for the regional government. To assist with the transition, the government committed to advancing payments to the sector and plans to automate the adaptation of subsidies to reduce bureaucracy.
