Spanish maritime transport investments

In July 2026 the Spanish government announced a €55 million allocation to continue expanding the Port of Bilbao’s Espigón Central, adding new berths and dock area while implementing shore‑power systems to reduce emissions. Concurrently, the Port Authority of Ceuta launched a tender to outsource the operation of passenger gangways at the Cañonero Dato pier, budgeting up to €846,000 for a multi‑year contract.

Later the same day, the European Commission approved a €74 million public‑aid scheme for Spain’s maritime routes. The subsidies, covering up to 70 % of extra fuel costs linked to the Middle‑East conflict, are directed at passenger and freight services connecting the Spanish mainland with the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla. Industry groups have urged the inclusion of pure‑cargo vessels, which are presently excluded.

Together, these actions illustrate a coordinated effort by national and EU authorities to bolster Spain’s port infrastructure and mitigate operational cost pressures on key maritime links, especially those serving its overseas territories.
