Authorities continue to investigate a series of high-profile museum robberies in Spain, including thefts at the Archaeological Museum of Badajoz in April, the Museum of Albacete in July, and the theft of the Villena Treasure from the Villena Museum (MUVI) on 27 August. Investigators believe specialized criminal networks are targeting precious metals and gemstones, noting that stolen items may be melted down to hide evidence. The investigation into the Villena Treasure remains a top priority for the Guardia Civil. Colonel Francisco Poyato of the Alicante Command stated that while the investigation is progressing, discretion is necessary to avoid compromising the search for the perpetrators. The theft has triggered increased security alerts across Spanish museums. In Valencia, the City Council has organized technical meetings to review and reinforce security measures in municipal museums and monuments, following a trend of thefts that includes an international incident at the Renoir Museum in France. Beyond Villena, a wave of thefts has targeted religious heritage in the Extremadura region, specifically in towns such as Barcarrota, Jerez de los Caballeros, and Valle de Santa Ana, where crowns and necklaces were stolen from Marian images. Europol has noted an increase in such crimes, identifying museums as high-priority targets for itinerant criminal gangs across Europe. Political pressure has mounted in the Valencian region. The PSPV-PSOE group in Les Corts Valencianes has formally requested a hearing with the Minister of Culture, Carmen Ortí, and the regional Secretary of Culture, Marta Alonso, to address security failures. José Chulvi, the PSPV-PSOE spokesperson for Culture, argued that current security protocols are ‘obsolete and not sufficient for new assault techniques.’ Additionally, the PP has requested a hearing with the Mayor of Villena, Fulgencio Cerdán, to clarify the security measures in place during the August 27 robbery.
