Spanish pension system protest in Madrid
Overview
In late October 2026, tens of thousands of demonstrators marched through central Madrid to defend Spain’s public pension system against potential privatization and cuts. Organizers, including the State Coordination for the Defence of the Public Pension System (COESPE), estimated participation between 25,000 and 50,000 people.
The protesters demanded that pensions remain indexed to real inflation, called for a 6% increase for 2027, and sought to equate minimum pensions with the national minimum wage. Additional demands included reducing the gender pension gap and removing certain reduction coefficients for early retirement.
The mobilization took place ahead of the general elections scheduled for November 29. The issue has become a focal point of political debate, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez accusing the Popular Party (PP) of planning to weaken inflation-linked increases, while PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has pledged to maintain such increases if his party wins.
