Spanish regional and municipal maternity support initiatives
Overview
Local and regional authorities in Spain have introduced various programs to support newborns, pregnant women, and families in need.
Initial efforts focused on material assistance through the distribution of baby hampers. In Algete, the City Council provided kits containing hygiene products and stroller accessories to alleviate household expenses. In the Balearic Islands, the ‘Cistella Nadó’ program was launched with a 430,000 euro budget to provide up to 9,000 welcome baskets annually to babies born in both public and private hospitals. These baskets include hygiene items and a welcome letter containing a QR code for accessing public social services.
Subsequent initiatives have expanded to include social and guidance-based support. In Seville, the Asociación Ángel Moliní – Dar Vida was established to assist pregnant women and mothers facing loneliness or social abandonment. Additionally, the City Council of Ciudad Real created the Municipal Office for Maternity Care, which provides guidance during pregnancy and postpartum. This office, in collaboration with Gabinete Sophya, offers educational sessions for parents and caregivers on topics such as emotional preparation and maintaining support networks.
