Spanish regional protests against renewable energy models

Overview

Protests against large-scale renewable energy installations have emerged across different regions in Spain. In Catalonia, agricultural unions, ecologists, and residents have united to demand the withdrawal of the Territorial Plan for the Implementation of Renewable Energies (PLATER). Protesters in the Horta de Lleida region argue the current model is “erroneous,” citing a lack of public participation and the potential loss of fertile irrigated land. They have called for a moratorium on large-scale solar projects to protect food sovereignty and local biodiversity.

Similarly, in the Valencian interior, environmental groups are organizing initiatives such as the ‘Tour-Malet’ bus route to highlight concerns regarding renewable energy plant locations. Activists in areas including Turís and the Ayora-Cofrentes Valley claim these developments risk turning the region into a ‘sacrifice zone’ by damaging local economies, water resources, and soil. Both movements emphasize a need for better territorial planning and more meaningful public involvement in the energy transition process.
