Spanish socioeconomic and health indicators
Overview
In late 2026, reports regarding Spain’s quality of life and public health showed conflicting trends. Data from the Multidimensional Quality of Life Indicator (IMCV) indicated a slight overall increase in quality of life for 2025, rising to 101.74 points. This improvement was attributed to gains in employment, health, education, and material living conditions, despite declines in leisure, social relations, and security.
However, subsequent data from the INE and the Ministry of Health highlighted a significant decline in perceived health. Only 68.3% of the population rated their health as good or very good, a 5.8-point drop from 2023 that brings levels to their lowest point since 1987. This decline was more pronounced among women and those in lower socioeconomic classes, with the lowest levels reported in Galicia, the Canary Islands, and Asturias. Specifically, women reported a 7.1-point decrease compared to a 4-point drop among men.
Further complicating the socioeconomic landscape, a report by Funcas based on Eurostat data revealed that severe material and social deprivation in Spain has worsened over the last decade. Despite economic growth, Spain has dropped from 15th to 5th place among EU member states regarding the proportion of the population facing such hardships. The national rate of severe deprivation rose to 8.1% in 2025, up from 3.5% in 2015, diverging from the decreasing EU average. Households with children under 16 are disproportionately affected, with a deprivation rate of 10.7%.
