Spanish wine industry regulatory and economic developments

Overview

The Rioja wine region has implemented new technological and preservation initiatives alongside facing economic tensions. The DOCa Rioja Regulatory Council introduced the ‘Portal del Viticultor’, an artificial intelligence platform designed to monitor vineyards, provide climate data, and predict production by flagging parcels that exceed authorized yields.

To protect the region’s agricultural heritage, the Council also launched a project to identify and certify 8,642 hectares of old vines and 240 centennial plots.

However, the region is experiencing internal disputes regarding economic sustainability. The agricultural union ARAG-Asaja has accused certain wineries of attempting to ‘balance their accounts at the expense of grape growers,’ demanding that grape purchase prices more accurately reflect production costs and quality standards.
