Spanish youths aged 18 to 35 are increasingly participating in financial markets to establish economic security. Data from the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) indicates that one in three young people in this demographic has invested in markets within the last year, though over half of these individuals have committed less than 1,000 euros. BBVA Research estimates that 46.2% of Spanish youths have invested in financial markets at some point. This shift is attributed to economic uncertainty and the rising cost of living. Experts highlight that high housing prices have hindered traditional savings methods; while a home could be acquired with 3.5 years of annual salary two decades ago, that requirement has risen to approximately 8 years of annual salary. To hedge against inflation and uncertain pension systems, young investors are using technology to access individual stocks and diversified indices such as the MSCI and S&P 500. However, this growing interest is accompanied by significant gaps in financial literacy. According to a 2026 Funcas survey of individuals aged 16 to 35, there is a notable disparity in perceived knowledge between genders, with only 13% of men and 6% of women considering their financial knowledge to be high or very high. Investment patterns also show gendered differences: men report higher savings rates and a stronger preference for the stock market and cryptocurrencies, while women are more likely to use interest-bearing accounts and investment funds. The EFPA Spain Financial Education Survey rates the general level of financial education in Spain as mediocre, scoring 5.3 out of 10. Advisors note that interest in economics is often reactive to inflation or volatility rather than proactive, specifically citing taxation as a major area of deficiency.
