Overview
Spanish youths aged 18 to 35 are increasingly participating in financial markets to establish economic security. Data from the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) indicates that one in three young people in this demographic has invested in markets within the last year, though over half of these individuals have committed less than 1,000 euros.
BBVA Research estimates that 46.2% of Spanish youths have invested in financial markets at some point. This shift is attributed to economic uncertainty and the rising cost of living. Experts highlight that high housing prices have hindered traditional savings methods; while a home could be acquired with 3.5 years of annual salary two decades ago, that requirement has risen to approximately 8 years of annual salary.
To hedge against inflation and uncertain pension systems, young investors are using technology to access individual stocks and diversified indices such as the MSCI and S&P 500.
