Sparta infrastructure upgrades
Overview
In July 2026 the Greek government approved two separate public‑investment projects in Sparta. On 22 July the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports and the Ministry of National Defence signed a €2.8 million contract to restore the historic Old Court building and convert it into the headquarters of the General State Archives of Lakonia, following a recent €30 million digitisation programme for the archives. A week later, on 31 July, the municipal stadium reopened after a €630 000 renovation funded through the Philodimos II programme and local resources. The upgrades added a new tartan athletics track, two FIBA‑spec 3‑on‑3 basketball courts, refurbished stands and ongoing work on locker rooms. Together, the projects illustrate a coordinated effort to modernise Sparta’s cultural heritage sites and sports facilities.
