Climate change is driving the expansion of spider species into Germany and Austria. In Germany, the Nosferatu spider (Zoropsis spinimana) is increasingly being found in homes, garages, and gardens. Experts from the Stuttgart Natural History Museum note that these spiders seek shelter in buildings to overwinter and describe the species as a “winner of climate change.” While their presence can cause stress, experts state they are largely harmless unless provoked. Recent observations indicate that the Nosferatu spider, which originates from Mediterranean regions, shows increased activity during its autumn mating season, particularly in October and November. During this time, the spiders frequently seek shelter in attics or basements to overwinter. Dr. Arnold Staniczek of the Natural History Museum in Stuttgart notes that residents will likely need to adapt to the presence of this species alongside other changing fauna. To manage sightings, experts recommend using glass and paper to relocate spiders outdoors rather than handling them directly. Preventive measures include sealing small cracks in buildings and installing fly screens on windows to limit entry points. In Austria, the Wasp spider has also established a presence in sunny habitats. To monitor these shifts, the Naturschutzbund Österreich is encouraging “citizen science” initiatives, asking the public to upload photos to help researchers track species distribution and prevalence.
