Efforts to increase awareness and medical understanding of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) are expanding across Latin America.

In Paraguay, the Association of Families with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (AFAME) scheduled the presentation of the book ‘El mundo de Sofía’ in Asunción. The initiative seeks to raise social awareness regarding the challenges faced by patients and their families, supported by medical insights into the importance of early detection and specialized follow-up.

Concurrently, medical awareness efforts have intensified in Brazil and Mexico. Experts highlight the critical nature of early diagnosis through genetic testing to access modern therapies, including intravenous, oral, and intrathecal treatments. In Mexico, there are expectations that these innovative drugs will be included in the basic formulary of public health institutions beginning in 2025.
