Square Enix Final Fantasy updates
Entities: Evercold expansion · Naoki Yoshida · Final Fantasy XIV · Nintendo Switch 2 · Square Enix Ltd.
Overview
Square Enix revealed that the original 1989 development of *Final Fantasy IV* began on the NES before moving to the Super Nintendo to use Mode 7, and later remastered the title for the Switch via the Pixel Remaster line.
At the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Berlin (July 2026) the company announced that the MMORPG will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on 4 August 2026. Pre‑orders are live on the eShop for Starter (€19.99/US$19.99), Complete (€59.99, pre‑order €41.99) and Collector’s (€139.99) editions. Buyers receive an approximate one‑month free subscription trial; thereafter a separate monthly subscription is required, with a 50 % discount for existing subscribers on other platforms and no Nintendo Switch Online membership needed.
The launch aligns with the sixth expansion, Evercold, scheduled for January 2027. Evercold adds a new main‑tank job (Bastion) wielding the Skyltborg greatshields, new zones Naglfar and Hringhorni, expanded character customization, and Auto Content Balancing that scales difficulty. Crossover raid content includes an Evangelion‑inspired “Ghosts of Desire” series (art by Mahiro Maeda) and a *Final Fantasy VII Remake* event “Beyond the Lifestream”. Character Action Skins let players alter skill animations. PlayStation 4 support continues until Patch 8.3, after which the platform will be phased out.
On 25 July 2026 Square Enix reiterated the launch schedule and confirmed that the Evercold expansion will debut alongside the Switch 2 release, reinforcing earlier announcements.
