Srebrenica Memorial Center and Ukraine cooperation

The Srebrenica Memorial Center has established a cooperation framework with Ukrainian institutions to exchange expertise on memorialization, human rights, and the documentation of war crimes.

Initial efforts involved visits to various Ukrainian organizations, including the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, the Holodomor National Museum, and the Babi Yar Holocaust Memorial Center. These meetings focused on archival research, museum work, and the presentation of victims' experiences to the public, aiming to combine Bosnia and Herzegovina’s experience in institutionalizing remembrance with Ukraine’s real-time documentation of the ongoing war.

Following these visits, the Center conducted presentations in Kyiv for Ukrainian prosecutors and activists, such as the Center for Civil Liberties. These sessions provided practical insights into methodologies for collecting data, working with witnesses, and the legal complexities of proving specific intent in genocide investigations, drawing on the legacy of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Recent developments have expanded into educational initiatives. Following meetings with the Ukrainian organization Vshanui, efforts are underway to introduce the historical context of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide to the Ukrainian public. This collaboration emphasizes the role of civil society in protecting historical truths and basing narratives on judicial rulings. Discussions have also addressed the importance of maintaining accuracy in public discourse, specifically noting the need to distinguish between victims of genocide and combat losses during the breakout from the enclave, as established by international tribunal rulings.
