Sri Lanka judicial disciplinary actions
Overview
The Judicial Service Commission of Sri Lanka has taken disciplinary action regarding two judicial officers.
Former Colombo Chief Magistrate and Moratuwa District Judge Thilina Gamage has been dismissed from judicial service. The dismissal follows a disciplinary inquiry led by the Commission, chaired by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, which found Gamage guilty of all charges. The misconduct allegations relate to a 2015 investigation into the illegal possession of a baby elephant named ‘Sakura’ using forged permits. Although the Attorney General’s Department dropped criminal charges against Gamage in 2021, the Commission proceeded with administrative action following a formal charge sheet issued in June 2025. Gamage had been under suspension since 2016.
In a separate ruling, the Commission reinstated Kosala Senadheera, the former Magistrate of the Colombo Fort Court. Senadheera, who had been serving under suspension, will receive back pay for the period he was away from duty.
