Disney and Lucasfilm have unveiled details for the upcoming film ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ at the D23 fan event. Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper, the film is a standalone adventure set approximately five years after ‘The Rise of Skywalker’. It focuses on a new era of the galaxy, featuring Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon, a cynical rogue whose fate is tied to a decommissioned G17 Imperial starfighter. The ensemble cast includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings. Director Shawn Levy has praised Gosling’s versatility, describing the collaboration as a “professional brotherhood” and noting the actor is suited for the film’s blend of romance, comedy, drama, and action. The character of Auberon has sparked fan speculation regarding potential connections to existing expanded universe lore or the ‘Legends’ continuity. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the franchise, Lucasfilm announced that both the original 1977 film (later retitled ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’) and ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ will receive IMAX 70mm film presentations in 2027. This marks the first time the original film will be presented in an IMAX format. A newly restored version of the original film is scheduled to return to theaters on February 19, 2027. ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’, which was shot using IMAX-certified cameras as a “Filmed For IMAX” production, is set for theatrical release on May 28, 2027. Additionally, a collaborative five-issue comic series, ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’, is expected to debut in late January 2027.
