Starlink expansion and infrastructure in Switzerland
Overview
SWISS has initiated a fleet-wide rollout of high-speed satellite internet powered by SpaceX’s Starlink technology. The rollout began with an operational flight on an Airbus A320neo from Zurich to Thessaloniki. The service, branded as ‘Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi powered by Starlink’, aims to provide connectivity from boarding to disembarkation and is free for passengers using a Travel ID or Miles & More service card. The airline intends to have its entire fleet equipped by the end of 2029.
Parallel to the airline rollout, SpaceX’s proposal to construct a large Starlink ground station in Leuk, Valais, has encountered political opposition. The project, which involves 40 large antennas, faces criticism from a broad political alliance concerned about security risks and the potential impact on Swiss neutrality, citing Starlink’s military use by the United States. Although the municipality of Leuk granted building permission, local residents have filed complaints with the Valais State Council.
