The defense situation in Ukraine has intensified due to critical air defense shortages and shifting U.S. policy. By 20 August, President Vladimir Putin threatened retaliatory strikes against Ukraine’s sensitive economic sectors. On 23 August, reports indicated that Zelenskyy has increased his request for U.S. missile stocks, with former Vice President Mike Pence noting that Zelenskyy estimates Ukraine needs 20 percent of remaining U.S. Patriot missile stocks to defend against strikes through the end of winter.
