Stefan Raab television career and RTL programming

Overview

German entertainer Stefan Raab is celebrating his 60th birthday, marking a career that has significantly shaped the nation’s television landscape. His career is often viewed in two distinct phases: his prolific early years, including successes such as the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest win and the quiz show ‘Wer weiß wie wann was war?’, and his recent return to the screen following a hiatus that began in 2015.

Raab’s professional journey began in his family’s butchery, where he trained as a master butcher, before rising to prominence in the 1990s via the music channel Viva. He became an icon through programs such as ‘TV Total’ and ‘Schlag den Raab’, and has established himself as a prolific music producer and composer. His extensive media projects and advertising deals have resulted in an estimated wealth between 50 and 120 million euros.

While colleagues like Olivia Jones have praised him as a creator of ‘a new kind of television’, his comeback with RTL has faced scrutiny. Following RTL Deutschland CEO Stephan Schmitter’s admission of strategic errors regarding programming rollouts—including the cancellation of the hybrid quiz show ‘Du gewinnst hier nicht die Million’—recent broadcasts have also drawn criticism. Comedian Oliver Pocher labeled a specific episode of ‘Die Stefan Raab Show’ a ‘colossal flop’ due to low viewership among younger demographics relative to production costs.

In response to these challenges, RTL has planned to pivot its strategy back toward the competitive and physical challenge formats that historically defined Raab’s appeal.
