Stellantis has implemented a significant production halt at its Cassino plant in Lazio, Italy, affecting assembly, stamping, and painting lines. The shutdown, which includes worker leave through mid-August, has extended the facility’s inactivity. Production volumes have declined significantly, with the workforce dropping from approximately 4,400 to just over 2,000 employees. The plant was notably excluded from Stellantis’ industrial plan presented in May. While the company indicated the site would eventually be integrated into a Maserati relaunch, those programs have been delayed until December. Union leaders have described the situation as “catastrophic,” calling for government intervention. As the shutdown period neared its end, uncertainty persisted. While the sheet metal and painting departments were scheduled to reopen in late August, the assembly department had no confirmed reopening date and was expected to remain closed until at least September. The Uilm union characterized the situation as a “structural crisis” rather than a standard seasonal break. In late September, Stellantis announced a new production halt scheduled from September 21 to 25, affecting the assembly, sheet metal, and painting departments. This follows a period of near-zero activity throughout the month. In response, the Uilm union of Frosinone has demanded that Stellantis present a definitive plan by December 2026, specifying vehicle models, production volumes, investment levels, and employment impacts. Additionally, the union is calling for support to help local suppliers diversify their client base to reduce dependence on the Cassino facility. In early October, Stellantis announced further suspensions at the Cassino plant, with stamping, painting, and assembly operations scheduled to halt from October 6 to October 9. During this period, only the press and plastics departments will remain active to serve other group plants. The Uilm union continues to demand a clear, verifiable industrial plan to address the ongoing crisis and protect employment.
