STEM education initiatives in Sarawak
Overview
Efforts to bolster Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Sarawak have progressed through both government-led academic programs and private sector support.
In mid-October, the Sarawak Premier’s Department officiated the ‘Program Pecutan SPM 2026: STEM’ at SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg. The initiative focused on preparing students for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations by addressing academic, mental, and psychological readiness. Officials noted that such education is vital for Sarawak’s 2030 development goals, particularly regarding technological advancements like aerospace and hydrogen-based transport.
Following this, PETRONAS announced a donation of RM1.2 million to provide 60 mobile STEM kits to schools across the region. These kits, which include science models and interactive tools, are intended to facilitate hands-on learning with a specific focus on rural and underserved communities. This initiative aligns with state objectives to increase the proportion of upper secondary students in STEM streams from approximately 36 percent to over 60 percent by 2030.
