STEYR and TU Wien HYTRAC hydrogen project

Overview

STEYR and TU Wien have launched the HYTRAC project, a research initiative designed to develop low-carbon agricultural mechanization through an integrated hydrogen-powered energy system.

The project focuses on a hydrogen internal combustion engine tractor paired with an electric power-split eCVT transmission. To create a scalable ecosystem, the initiative incorporates on-farm hydrogen storage and refueling infrastructure, referred to as COMBHY, which utilizes renewable energy sources like biomass, wind, and solar managed via AI-optimized control. Real-world demonstrations are planned at the Energy Hub Neusiedl in Austria to validate the system’s performance and carbon abatement potential.
