Storm damage insurance claims in Latvia

Overview

Following widespread storm damage in Latvia, insurance companies have reported a significant surge in claims related to property, vehicles, and agricultural crops.

Initial reports from insurers such as BTA Baltic Insurance Company and Balta indicated hundreds of claims involving broken roofs, flooded basements, and damage from falling trees. At that stage, BTA had reserved one million euros to cover its losses, while Balta estimated total losses could exceed several million euros.

By late August, the scale of the impact grew. The Latvian Insurers Association (LAA) reported that over 4,800 claims had been filed, with approximately 8.05 million euros reserved for potential payouts. LAA President Jānis Abāšins noted that these figures represent only the beginning of the assessment process and expects the total number of claims and payout amounts to increase.
